Tour DS Waters’ bottling facility which produces 1 gallon, 3/5- gallon, and 2.5 gallon spring, purified, distilled and fluoridated water products for residential and commercial customers throughout the Central Florida.  This tour will include DS Waters’ state-of-the-art purification processes, world-class disinfection systems, start of the art mineral injection, and robotic loading technology.  Bus transportation will depart from the Orange County Convention Center.  You can select one of four departure times and will want to allow 2 hours for the transfers and tour. Joe Harrison reviews water treatment chemistry and provides an overview of water treatment technologies such as reverse osmosis, filtration, activated carbon, and ion exchange. Mr. Harrison will describe the design of a generic POU reverse osmosis system, the difference between hard water and soft water, water treatment ion exchanger configurations, factors affecting filtration of particles from water, and the different properties of activated carbon produced from different raw materials.

Regulatory bodies worldwide, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, authorize the use of polycarbonate for beverage and food containers based on an extensive scientific database that supports their safety. However, in recent years the raw material used to make polycarbonate, bisphenol-A (BPA) has been alleged to be an “endocrine disruptor” that may cause health effects at very low levels of exposure. This session will provide an update of the current health and environmental issue landscape for BPA and polycarbonate plastic.

IBWA has commissioned a life cycle inventory (LCI) of the bottled water industry for 2007. The LCI executive summary and three LCI tools (interactive spreadsheets) for small pack, home and office delivery (HOD), and combination plants highlight material inputs, energy consumption, and environmental emissions.  They were designed to be the basis of further study of the potential improvement of resource use and environmental emissions associated with bottled water product systems. This session will reveiw the LCI data, explain how to interpret the data, and demonstrate how it can be used in your business.
